Join team Jalapeno for  the iconic Round the Island Race 2018

We’ve got a great package together for the 2018 Round the Island race, adding up to 5 days of sail training and racing, with two nights in Cowes on the weekend of the Round the Island Race itself. We’ll be using our 43′ Standfast Jalapeno, who spent 2017 competing in a number of offshore races, culminating in the 2017 Fastnet Race. We run a friendly and welcoming ship, with our focus on everyone having a chance to learn and take part in different aspects of crewing the boat. Our package is split into two parts

Training weekend

Saturday 30th June & Sunday 1st July Starts and ends Itchenor, Chichester harbourround the island race fleet

A chance to get to grips with the boat, practise hoisting and collapsing spinnakers, safety manouevres, navigation overview and overall preparation for the Round the Island Race. It will also be a chance to meet with other members of the crew and communicate anything you would particularly like to get out of the days’ training and racing.

Racing weekend

Friday 6th to Sunday 8 July Starts and ends Itchenor, Chichester harbour

Friday and Saturday evenings moored at Shepherds Marina, Cowes.

We’ll make our way up to Cowes on the Friday, a chance to refresh yourselves with the boat. Saturday morning will be an early start and the day itself will depend very much on the weather. At the least it will be a reasonably long day with plenty of effort keeping a good lookout, trimming sails and getting the most out of Jalapeno. The course itself is about 50 nautical miles and in 2017 we finished in 9 hours 51 minutes, making 418th place out of over 1800 boats. When we finish our reserved berth will be waiting for us back in Cowes where it’s a short walk to check out the evening’s events provided by Round the Island Race organisers and the chance to shower! We offer the opportunity to join us for a dinner ashore at a favourite Italian restaurant that we will book in advance for you (cost not included).

Jalapeno, a safe and exciting boat
Jalapeno is a Dutch built Standfast 43, a solid roomy boat that handles the sea well. She is a similar design and quality as the classic Sparkman & Stevens Swan yachts. See a gallery of photos here. Your skipper will be one of our professional commercially endorsed staff as well a First Mate with plenty of experience sailing onboard Jalapeno.

round the island race mapWhat last year’s crew said about Round the Island Race 2017

“What a friendly bunch of guys that run the Sail Boat Project, very welcoming especially on first meeting them the night before our race, a beer was thrust into our hands! Perfect for the balmy evening that it was.”

“Jalapeno a Standfast 43, maybe old and not the fastest boat on the water but everything on her works and works properly, all lines run as smooth as you like. She is also very comfortable and roomy, plenty of room to work on her foredecks so as a result, there isn’t the drama with a headsail change that often one experiences on a school boat. Ben and Dhara were a joy to sail with when we competed with them in the ‘Round the Island Race’ this past weekend. And to boot, we were constantly topped up with food all day and this was always followed by tea, coffee or refreshing lemonade. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and wouldn’t hesitate in sailing with them again or recommending anyone who is new to sailing to go out with them.”
